Corneal Mapping
Corneal topography, which is also known as photokeratoscopy or videokeratography, is a non-invasive imaging system for mapping the curvature of the cornea, which is the outer part of your eye. The cornea is usually responsible for up to 70% of the eye’s refractive power, so its shape is of vital importance in the quality of vision.
A 3-dimensional map is therefore an extremely valuable aid to the examining optometrist and can help in the diagnosis and treatment of a large number of conditions; in planning refractive surgery such as LASIK and evaluation of its results; or in checking the fit of contact lenses. A development of keratoscopy, corneal topography extends the measurement range from the four points a few millimeters apart that is offered by keratometry to a grid of thousands of points covering the whole cornea. The procedure can be carried out in just seconds and is completely painless.

Digital Retinal Imaging & OCT Scans
We use state of the art imaging technology to assess your vision. Most eye diseases, if diagnosed at an early stage, can be treated without total loss of your vision. Your retinal images will be filed electronically. This gives us a life-long record of the condition and state of your retina and eye function.
This is a very important tool in assisting your optometrist to detect and measure any changes to your retina or vision every time you get your eyes assessed, as many eye diseases, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma are diagnosed by detecting minor changes over time.
The advantages of our digital imaging include:
- Quick, safe, non-invasive and painless
- No patient prep required
- Provides detailed images of your retina and sub-surface of your eyes
- Uses eye-safe near-infra-red light
- Image resolution is extremely high quality
- Provides instant, direct imaging of the form and structure of eye tissue
Digital Retinal Imaging
Through Digital Retinal Imaging your eye doctor can evaluate the health of the back of your eye, the retina. It is vital to confirm the health of your retina, your optic nerve and other structures. Our digital camera captures a high-resolution digital image of your retina. This picture will clearly show the health of your eye and is then used as a baseline to check any changes in your eyes during eye examinations in the future.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
An Optical Coherence Tomography scan (usually referred to as an OCT scan) is the very latest advancement in imaging tools. Similar to an ultrasound, this diagnostic tool employs light instead of sound waves to get a higher resolution picture of the structure of the back of your eye.
A laser is used to scan the layers of your retina and optic nerve for any indications of eye diseases, similar to a CT scan of the eye. It works using light without any radiation, and is vital for early diagnosis of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinal disease.
With an OCT scan, doctors are provided with cross-sectional images of your retina. These highly detailed images are revolutionizing early detection and treatment of many eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, wet and dry age-related macular degeneration, and retinal detachment.
An OCT scan is a noninvasive, and completely painless test. It can be completed in about 10 minutes right here in our office. Please contact our office to inquire about an OCT at your next appointment.
Visual Field Testing
A visual field test is used to measure how much ‘side’ vision you have. It is a very straightforward test. It is completely painless, and does not require eye drops. During the exam lights are flashed, and you have to press a button when you see the light. Your head must remain still, to aid this, you will place your chin on a chin rest. The lights are both bright and dim at different stages of your test. Some of these flashes are purely to check you are concentrating on the task.
Each eye is tested individually and the whole test takes between 15 and 45 minutes. Your doctor may ask only for a driving licence visual test, which only takes 5 to 10 minutes. If you have just asked for a driving test or the clinic doctor advised you have one, you will be informed of the result by the clinic doctor, in writing, in a few weeks.
Usually the test is carried out by a computerised machine, called a Humphrey. However, sometimes the manual test must be used, a Goldman. For each of these tests, you have to look at a central point then press a buzzer each time you see the light.
OPTOS Retinal Exam
Annual eye exams are the key to maintaining your vision and overall health. We offer the optomap® Retinal Exam as an vital part of our eye exams. The optomap® Retinal Exam gives us an image that is as unique as your fingerprint and provides us with a wide view to look at the health of your eye. The retina is the part of your eye that captures the image of what you are looking at, similar to film in a camera.
Many eye problems can develop without you knowing. You may not even notice any change in your sight. But, diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, and other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be seen with a thorough exam of the retina.
An optomap® Retinal Exam provides:
- A scan to show a healthy eye or detect disease.
- A view of the retina, giving your doctor a more detailed view than he/she can get by other means.
- The opportunity for you to view and discuss the optomap® image of your eye with your doctor at the time of your exam.
- A permanent record for your file, which allows us to view your images each year to look for changes.
The optomap® Retinal Exam is fast, easy, and comfortable for all ages. To have the exam, you simply look into the device one eye at a time and you will see a comfortable flash of light to let you know the image of your retina has been taken. The optomap® image is shown immediately on a computer screen so we can review it with you.
