Simplifying Your Surgery
Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis, otherwise known as laser eye surgery or LASIK, has been a part of the repertoire of many skilled ophthalmologists for years. It involves using laser technology to adjust the shape of the cornea to correct vision issues such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness. Patients from all walks of life have reported excellent results after having LASIK performed, but like other surgeries, the quality of pre-care and aftercare are essential components of lasting good results.
Although not all eye clinics have onsite staff who performs LASIK, many provide co-management services where they work in partnership with the surgeon to provide patients with both pre-and-post-operative care. Here’s what you can expect:
Before the Surgery
Co-managing eye care professionals perform a comprehensive eye exam before surgery to rule out any extenuating circumstances that would potentially interfere with the surgery. They’ll check your prescription, determine your overall eye health, measure your eyes to provide the surgeon with a customized template and explain the procedure to you in detail. You’ll also get a set of pre-operative instructions. For instance, if you wear contacts, you’ll be asked to stop wearing them several weeks before the surgery. Certain medications may also be restricted, and you’ll be asked to limit intake of tobacco and alcohol during the weeks leading up to the surgery as well as the weeks following it because these substances can slow down your recovery.
After the Surgery
The co-manager monitor the patient’s recovery after the LASIK procedure has been performed to ensure the healing process is on track and that no complications have developed. Post-operative care begins the day after the surgery with the successive appointment on the fourth day. After that, you’ll be seen at the one month, three months, six months, and one year marks.
